Selecting Scoring Options for a Series

What are the Primary Options?

Before digging in to the possible options in ezRegatta, you might find it useful to read or skim the attached article which discusses the pro's and con's of each ranking system in detail, and which could help make the options in ezRegatta easier to follow.

The main options for scoring series in ezRegatta are Low Point, High Point, CHIPSv3, Cox Sprague and a variation on High Point used currently by the DF95 class and by the Australian RC sailing body, ARYA. Brief explanations of these are included in ezRegatta as you select them. Refer to the attached document for more detail.

Selecting your Options

On tapping or clicking the "Series Setting" button on the series detail page, you will first be able to rename the series in the top section, and then in the next section you can mange up to 5 characteristics of your series scoring:

Score Each Race or Regatta:

Depending on how your season is structured (many races in a few regattas, weekly racing with a few races each etc.) you can choose to combine the regattas by considering each individual race for series scoring, or you can use the overall result of each regatta and combine those for a series rank. Tapping the first selector will let you pick your preference.

Series Scoring Method:

The "method" refers to the 5 main options mentioned above. As you pick one, the information panel below will change to give an overview of the method and how it is implemented.

Baseline Score (High Point scoring only)

In High point scoring it is typical for the competitor to score a point for every competitor in the regatta (or race) that they beat.

In order to reward the last and, close to last place finishers who competed, compared to competitors who skipped that regatta, a baseline number of points can be added for them. So a 10 boat regatta with a 4 point baseline will award 4 points to  last place, 13 points to  first place, and 0 points to the boats that did not compete.

The baseline score you would like is entered on this line of the form.

Minimum Number of Races/Regattas (Cox Sprague only)

When using the Cox Sprague method the points for each competitor are averaged across the regattas (or races) they competed in. To avoid encouraging the lucky skipper whose first regatta was a win, who decided the only way from there was down, and who skipped the rest of the season, this system allows you to require a minimum number of regattas (or races) before you are ranked. That number is entered on this line of the form.

Use Weighting (CHIPS, High Point and DF/ARYA only)

While these series scoring methods already reward winners in larger fleets, it may be desirable to additionally reward skippers entering highly competitive regattas such as Regional, National or Global championships. By toggling this option on, the scoring will multiply scores for each regatta by their weight before totaling them.

The weights for each regatta default to 1.0, and can be set in the edit regatta page (tap regattas tab and tap the regatta name)

Throwouts (Race or Regatta)

Tapping this button will allow throwout (discards) to be set based on the number of regattas, or races if the Score each Race option was selected above. They are set in the same way as for race throwout in a regatta, but are separate, and do not affect the individual regatta throwouts.
